Where does the idea death comes in 3's come from?

I don't believe in superstition - think it's nonsense - shoes upon the table, a spiders been killed, someone broke the looking glass!!! My friend has lost 3 members of her family in 2 weeks (unrelated causes) so I was just wondering where this idea stemmed from?
